Cattle vaccination schedule: mandatory vaccines

Regular vaccination is the foundation of herd health and official compliance. Always check the current programme with your local agriculture directorate and veterinarian.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine

FMD is a mandatory vaccine run through state campaigns and applied in two periods per year (spring–autumn). Under the campaign, generally all cattle older than 2 months are vaccinated (calves born to unvaccinated dams from 14 days old). Vaccinations are carried out by agriculture directorate officials or authorized veterinarians.

Brucellosis vaccine

Given to female cattle against brucellosis. Common practice: a conjunctival vaccine (B. abortus S19) for heifer calves at 3–6 months of age, followed by a booster at set intervals. As brucellosis is also important for public health (a zoonosis), it is tracked within the programme.

LSD (Lumpy Skin Disease) vaccine

Applied to all cattle older than 3 months. Since LSD is contagious and causes economic loss, vaccinating within the programme is important.

Other vaccines

Depending on region and risk, anthrax, rabies and calf vaccine programmes (e.g. against respiratory/diarrhea agents) may also be applied. Your veterinarian decides which vaccine is necessary for your operation.
