Calf care: the first 30 days

A calf's first month shapes its health and productivity for life. Here is a complete step-by-step guide.

1. The first hours: colostrum is vital

The first hours after birth are the most critical period for a calf's immunity. Colostrum contains the antibodies that protect the calf against disease, and the gut can only absorb these antibodies during the first 24 hours.

2. Navel hygiene

Right after birth, the navel cord should be cleaned with a disinfectant such as iodine tincture; this prevents navel infections (omphalitis).

3. Housing: dry, warm, draft-free

4. Feeding plan

5. Health monitoring and early warning

The first 30 days carry a risk of diarrhea and respiratory disease. Watch appetite and the suckling reflex, stool consistency, and any nasal discharge/cough/lethargy daily. If anything looks off, consult a veterinarian without delay.

6. Vaccination and records

Ear-tagging the calf, recording the birth and starting the vaccination schedule are administrative but critical tasks in the first month. Keeping these records in order is required both for official requirements and for herd management.
