How long does pregnancy last in cows?
The average gestation period in cattle is 280–285 days (about 9 months). It may vary by a few days depending on the breed and the individual animal. Recording the insemination date is the only way to determine the estimated calving date.
What are the signs of pregnancy?
- No return to heat: If a cow does not show heat again after insemination, at around 21 days, pregnancy becomes more likely. This is the earliest clue.
- Behaviour and appetite: A calmer disposition and a more consistent appetite.
- Changes in the abdomen and udder: Abdominal enlargement in later months and udder filling toward the end of gestation.
These signs are not enough for a definitive diagnosis. Pregnancy must be confirmed by a veterinarian.
How is pregnancy confirmed?
- Rectal examination: Performed by a veterinarian, usually about 6–8 weeks after insemination.
- Ultrasound: Can provide earlier and more detailed information, including twin pregnancy and fetal viability.
- Blood or milk tests: Laboratory tests that detect pregnancy-associated proteins.
